From the humble beginnings as a farming community and the "Hay Shipping Capital of the World", the Town of Gilbert takes its name from William "Bobby" Gilbert. After selling a right-of-way across his land to the Phoenix and Eastern Railroad Company in 1902. The railway and spur eventually grew to our Town of Gilbert.

Now Gilbert is home to 250,000 residents and counting as the word got out. National awards like 2nd Safest City and 22nd Best Place to Live in the Country haven't hurt one bit. The accolades for our Town have piled up to the point that it's impossible to list them all here.

With plenty of recreational activities, our residents and visitors were drawn to Gilbert. Six golf courses, nine major parks, four community pools, three theaters for the arts, four community recreation centers and an indoor ice arena all serve to provide families with ample opportunity to get out and enjoy the over 300 days of sunshine that fall on us each year.

Shopping, dining and entertainment options can be found throughout Gilbert. San Tan Village, Gilbert's open air mall features national retailers and the adjacent San Tan Village Marketplace holds additional shopping, dining and nightlife options that provide something for everyone. The Gilbert Heritage District is home to the foodie scene with over 20 restaurants, the Gilbert Farmers Market on Saturdays and the Art Walk the first and third Saturday of each month.
